Kerry and his Vietnam Service

 7-11-2004

Bill Keller, Editor

A few thought about Kerry and his Vietnam service that should cause folks to think twice if they want him commanding our troops.

I think there is enough information out there to allow everyone to judge whether he was “worthy” of his medals.  Verified stories of him missing a total of 2 days to recover from the wounds that gave him all three medals go along way to show Kerry’s willingness to fall prey to opportunism.  I saw with my own eyes this “medal inflation”.  It happened.  However, for Kerry to now flout these medals as an indication of his ability to lead in wartime it quite telling.

A few weeks ago I was chatting with my daughter on the phone trying to explain my feelings about Kerry and his use of the 3 Purple Hearts to gain rotation back to “the world” after 4 months.  Suddenly, I noticed I couldn’t really talk and that tears were coming down my face. Coming home and leaving friends behind when my rotation date came around was incredibly difficult.  The thought of going home while they were still in danger still bothers me nearly 33 years later.

However, Senator Kerry seems to have had no such problem.  He abandoned his men after 4 months and returned home to begin his life anew as a military aide and a war protester.  If I look in my heart and wonder if this is the kind of man I want to be in power when my son could be entering the military during his Presidency, I find the answer easily.

To this day I see my friend’s faces, 33 years younger.  And I wonder if I should have stayed a second tour, could I have done more, should I have come home.  The truth is that there is simply no answer to those questions.

But, whether Senator Kerry is worthy of being President was answered for me by his military service.
