Where Is The Shame? By BOB HERBERT, NY Times

A Response to Mr. Herbert, sent 8/27/2007

Where Is The Shame?

In deed, where is it??  You spend an entire column condemning 250 plus veterans for speaking their mind.  Does that not bring shame to your heart??

These are men, including over 60 that served along side Kerry.  They are replete with their own wounds of honor, tears of sadness and remembrances of a youth spent on the killing fields.  And, daily, I hear they do not have aright to speak their mind.

I remember my return date to the US as though it were yesterday.  April 23,1971.  Ring a bell??  On that day, soon to be Senator Kerry was telling the world and our enemies that I was a war criminal.  You can try to dance around his words, but honestly, if you have to dance around his statements, that says volumes.  He clearly stated that we, as members of the US military, on a daily basis and as part of normal operations, committed war crimes.  If you are looking for someone to apologize for shameful behavior, how about Senator Kerry.  Not that I would accept his apology today.  But the offer might show some level of sorrow for his lies before the Senate Committees.

How about "The Shame" of Howard Dean, implying that President Bush knew about 9/11 in advance??

How about "The Shame" of Terry McAuliffe declaring that the President was AWOL?

How about "The Shame" of Senator Kennedy stating that President Bush fabricated reasons for the war in Iraq?

How about "The Shame" of Fahrenheit 911?

How about "The Shame" of Kerry trotting out Max Cleland for the sympathy vote.  While I hurt for his loss of 3 limbs (acquired, according to his own campaign, while picking up a grenade on the ground while on his way to have a few beers with his buddies), it infuriates me that Kerry parades around his 3 purple hearts for his trivial injuries while Cleland received nothing for his lost limbs.  No hostile fire you know.

In a time of war, the Democrats have chosen to make a mockery of our security, our place on the world stage and our basic freedoms.  That you would actively support stifling decorated veteran’s right to free speech is telling and implies that our true enemies reside within our borders.

You, sir, should be ashamed of yourself!

Bill Keller
Vinton, Iowa
